Bar Harbor Residence
The intent of this landscape design was to create a Landscape Master Plan for the installation of Period Gardens reflective of the Golden Age of American Gardens (1890 – 1940). These Gardens would be used to guide the development of a teaching facility in the Horticultural Arts as part of the University of Maine Horticultural Program. The work of Beatrix Farrand was chosen for the inspiration for the Master Plan not only for her historical relation to Bar Harbor, but more importantly because she is recognized as one of the most accomplished persons in the profession of landscape architecture and the garden design arts for her elegant gardens with rich architectural detailing. The installation of the Lych Gate Estate Entry was the beginning of the realization of the proposed Master Plan, inspired by a design sketch in Ms. Farrand’s early career for an estate on Mt. Desert Island. This was modified to accommodate modern vehicular needs and current building codes.
